Shooting a beauty campaign is a process that requires long hours of preparation and postproduction as well as a certain skill set and an eye for detail. Someone who knows all about it is a beauty photographer Courtney Daily. This multitalented woman is not only a beauty photographer, she is a make-up artist and beauty expert herself. We asked her how it all began:
“I started in Detroit Michigan, which is a tough place to start as a beauty photographer. Through a million missteps and learning the hard way, I found the way on my own to build a healthy business. I now mentor and train other artists to find the visual voice and help them develop a brand based on their style. My hope is that with each student that they can avoid the same pitfalls I fell into during my building phase.”
Courtney is known for her use of color, dramatic and confident looks. According to Courtney, images should communicate concepts, stories or evoke feelings. The secret to getting the right result is assigning the right people to the project:
”I have to first determine my team for the project. If the product calls for more drama I might bring in one team over another. If the client has a model known for a big personality, I’ll bring in an artistry team who can handle that personality. I enjoy the creative process of planning. Sitting with my prop stylists and talking about the props we might need, can be really fun and allows us to use our imaginations.”
We also had the pleasure to ask a talented Fashion & Beauty advertising photographer Caesar Lima about his secret to success:
“Having a BA in Advertising helps me a lot. I understand what art directors and creative directors want and like I said before, I love to work with a creative group of people.” Caesar’s advice for aspiring hair and beauty photographers: “Test as often as possible. It’s ok to get inspired by other photographer’s work but you need to develop your own style; shoot shoot shoot every day. It’s like going to the gym, hard work pays off.
Tip: start a Project 365 one picture a day – not only will you exercise your eyes, but you will get a lot of PR from your blog.”
