Nick Rees’ new personal project reveals the secretive beauty behind one of the world’s most coveted liquids: petrol.
The macro shots are an extension of his usual drinks photography, using his skill of controlling liquids to display them in a different light. The shots show thin layers of petrol floating on top of water, the varying oil thicknesses creating different textures.
By taking the time to observe and experiment with this unpredictable liquid, the play of colours and textures are revealed, creating what looks like jewellery, fine silk or distant galaxies.

"I’m a still life photographer, specialising in the world of drinks and liquids. I find the complexity of photographing the intricate play of light through liquids fascinating.
I work both in the studio and on location to create hyper-realistic, ‘graphic’ images that emphasise the beauty of the subject.
This shot is from a project called The Big Smoke, a celebration of the London bar scene. Each image takes you into a different London bar, where one of their experienced staff has made their favourite drink. The images are shot in a style that captures the atmosphere of the bars in which the drinks were made. Take a look at my website for a brief history, as well as a recipe of each drink."
