A keen enthusiast for sport himself, his goal is to capture authentic movement that not only appeal to a commercial audience, but also give a nod to the sport purists. Whether that’s ensuring the technique on a boxing shot doesn’t look awkward and unrealistic or a passion to avoid cliche leaps and stretches too often seen in fitness photography, Rich ensures his shots are not only vibrant with colour but also true to their origins.

Rich Maciver blends a passion for sport with vibrant, beautifully lit, photography of active lifestyles.

Rich began his photography journey shooting cycling, and in particular BMX. As his cycling portfolio evolved, he began shooting features for publications including Dennis publishings Cyclist Magazine.

After assisting for five years, Rich set out in 2017 to concentrate on his own work and hasn’t looked back, with a portfolio that now includes massive brands such as Nike, Garmin, Reebok, Puma, Gymshark, Converse, Adidas, Red Bull, Mars Wrigley and Samsung.

Rich has been kept busy lately by working hard on a recent personal project - Pain Caves - centred around indoor cycling, documenting how cyclists continue to push their limits at home.

He also recently shot the campaign imagery to launch new fitness platform GrindHouse. Founded by five former Barry’s Bootcamp trainers, GrindHouse has hit the market with a bang with Rich’s beautifully lit striking imagery taking centre stage.

Rich specialises in active lifestyles both in studio and on location and recent clients include Puma, Gymshark, Grindhouse and Skinsmiths.

Growing up in the BMX scene documenting friends and then pros, Rich uses that experience of working reactively in the fast paced environment of commercial and advertising photography. It’s also become a huge skill when a cool and level head is needed - when you can document someone doing 50mph down a mountain on a bicycle or flipping through the air, then everything else is relatively slow paced.

Over the last eighteen months Rich has worked extensively with the Gymshark team. Shooting some of their largest campaigns over the course of 2019 and 2020. Showcasing an ability to not only consistently shoot strong images but also create a great on-set environment.

Spring 2018 has seen Rich Maciver continue to expand his studio and portraiture portfolio to his ever growing fashion and lifestyle work.

With a passion for authenticity and an acute understanding for studio lighting and natural daylight, his calm approach has seen him shoot week-long campaigns this year for clients including Red Bull's new clothing brand Alpha Tauri SS18 in Lisbon, and for the JD Group's Scotts Menswear SS18 including in-store and UK-wide advertising.

"My history in sports photography stems from a life-long passion for cycling. Through riding BMX as a teen, I’d pick up the odd injury and rather than miss out on the social aspect, I picked up a camera, rode along, and the rest is history.

Personally, I believe it was that process of shooting a subject I was so invested in that taught me how essential authenticity is in photography, in particular sports photography. So now, no matter what genre the subject hails from, my goal is to beautifully light and document them in their most authentic moments. Whether that’s on location or in studio.

Perhaps it was shooting BMX riders throwing themselves off rooftops and down stairs during those formative years that instilled the calm, organised demeanour in me that is required to handle the high pressure environments of large-scale productions, and the often time restricted settings of shooting elite level athletes."
