It was at age five that Richard found himself running a slide projector. His job was to advance the deck for his father, an outdoorsman and photographer who would regale the local mountaineering community with tales and imagery brought back from his adventures. Seeing nature through his father’s lens, Richard developed an eye for the vast and an understanding of scale.
As he grew, so did his love of cars & motorsport. These interests were engendered by family, who offered a look into that world — and he could take his camera there. Though speed and finesse are racing currency, Richard’s family and friends instilled in him the idea that these machines are best appreciated through a deep understanding of their inner workings. This belief distilled his vision, and his images began to bear the essence of his knowledge and respect for each car. Richard went on to hone his image-making skills at The Savannah College of Art and Design, and it was at a track just down the road where someone first asked, “can I pay you for those photos?”
Post-college years spent working on feature films extended Richard’s deep technical knowledge from the world of cars into the world of cameras. These skills became complementary, uniting production know-how with an innate appreciation for detail in order to get the most out of each shot. The result is a seamless integration which yields high-energy, atmospheric imagery.
From tracks and car events in the Southern US, work in automotive photography has led him around the world to create campaigns and social libraries for some of the world’s most recognizable automotive brands including Bentley, BMW, Chevrolet, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, and Pagani Automobili.
Richard currently resides downtown Los Angeles, though when not on the road you’ll frequently find him roving under the clear skies of Lake Tahoe, camera in tow, III.
